about

It wasn't a time for creative titles, but it was another November. In 2012 Troll were still passionate about making music. Music was in our heads and ears day after day. But this town was nowhere and nothing.

The opportunity to become part of an artistic community and perform in venues was not here in Geraldton, Western Australia. It was 5 hours away. And I was a 19 year old with no car. The realities of adulthood were becoming apparent.

Levi got his drivers licence and started working at a shady metal yard.

I did not get my licence, and started teaching guitar.

Then a musician, artist and hard working man by the name of Mark Kowald came into our lives. Mark became our second drummer and also turned us on to other things going on musically in the world via his math rock two piece, Good Luck in Haiti. Through his help, and with his car, and the kindness of rock and roll experts The Devil Rides Out, Troll was able to play five shows in Perth in 2013.

I became very interested in recording other people's music, and started lugging around a laptop and a microphone to people's houses and recording. This ended up becoming an eclectic album by the name of Soul Jams, many tracks still being on my Soundcloud.

So this obsession carried over to Troll, and the microphone was placed in the middle of the shed we rehearsed in on Fitzgerald Street. I was feeling a need for our project to do well, to be successful, and a new EP was what I thought was called for.

Well, what I got was some very poor sounding recordings, but I think the joy of hearing Troll with two drummers in my headphones was enough for me to proclaim Troll had a new EP.

Tracks 1 and 3 are full improvisations. Track 5 displays some of the music I was writing in a genre that wasn't rock. And track 6 is a bass and drums improvisation, with a guitar track overdubbed, and then sped up.
